Do we usually eat male or female turkeys?

Published in Food & Cooking 1 min read

We usually eat female turkeys.

While both male and female turkeys are raised for meat, female turkeys (hens) are generally preferred for several reasons:

  • Tenderness: Female turkeys tend to have more tender meat than male turkeys.
  • Flavor: Female turkeys have a more delicate flavor.
  • Size: Female turkeys are typically smaller than male turkeys, making them easier to cook and more convenient for smaller families.
  • Breeding: Male turkeys (toms) are primarily used for breeding, which means they are not as readily available for meat.

Although female turkeys are more common on dinner tables, male turkeys (toms) are still raised for meat and are often used for ground turkey or turkey sausage.
