Avocados and Certain Health Conditions
Avocado is a healthy and versatile fruit, but there are a few things you should be mindful of when incorporating it into your diet.
- Latex allergy: If you have a latex allergy, you may also be allergic to avocados because they share similar proteins.
- Kidney disease: Individuals with kidney disease should consume avocados in moderation, as they are high in potassium.
- Liver issues: Avocados are high in collagen, which can be difficult to digest for some people. Individuals with liver problems should consult with their doctor before consuming large amounts of avocados.
Avocado Storage and Preparation
- Overripe avocados: While overripe avocados are still edible, they may have a mushy texture and an off-taste.
- Avocado oxidation: Once cut, the exposed flesh of an avocado quickly oxidizes and turns brown. To prevent this, you can brush the cut surface with lemon or lime juice, or store it in an airtight container.
- Avocado skin: The skin of an avocado is not edible and should be removed before consumption.
Pairing Avocados with Other Foods
- Dairy: Avocados and dairy products are not a great combination, as they can cause digestive issues.
- High-sodium foods: Avocados are naturally low in sodium. Pairing them with high-sodium foods can lead to a sodium overload.
