Linda Blair did not actually hurt her back during the filming of The Exorcist. The film's iconic scenes of Regan MacNeil, the character Blair played, contorting and moving in unnatural ways were achieved through a combination of special effects, makeup, and Blair's own physical performance.
While Blair's performance was physically demanding, she was not injured during filming. The film's director, William Friedkin, employed various techniques to create the terrifying illusion of Regan's demonic possession, including:
- Rigging: Blair was often strapped to a rig that allowed her to be lifted and moved in a variety of positions.
- Makeup and prosthetics: Special effects makeup artists created prosthetics that gave Blair's face a grotesque appearance, enhancing the illusion of demonic possession.
- Camera angles: Friedkin used creative camera angles to create the illusion of Regan's body contorting in ways that would be impossible for a human.
- Blair's performance: Blair herself was highly dedicated to her role and was willing to push herself physically to create a convincing performance.
The combination of these techniques contributed to the film's success in creating a truly terrifying and unforgettable portrayal of demonic possession.
