What is PKR surgery?

Published in Eye Surgery 2 mins read

PKR surgery, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a type of laser eye surgery used to correct vision problems caused by refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During PKR, a laser is used to reshape the cornea, the clear outer layer of the eye, to improve how light focuses on the retina.

Unlike LASIK surgery, which involves creating a flap in the cornea, PKR removes the outer layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, before reshaping the underlying tissue. This allows the cornea to heal naturally, typically within a few weeks.

Benefits of PKR surgery:

  • Effective for a wide range of refractive errors: PKR can effectively treat a wide range of vision problems, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
  • Suitable for patients with thin corneas: Since PKR doesn't involve creating a flap, it can be a good option for patients with thin corneas who may not be suitable for LASIK.
  • Relatively safe and painless: PKR is a generally safe and effective procedure, and most patients experience minimal discomfort during and after surgery.

Potential risks and side effects:

  • Delayed healing: The cornea takes longer to heal after PKR compared to LASIK, which can lead to discomfort and temporary blurry vision.
  • Undercorrection or overcorrection: Like any surgical procedure, PKR can sometimes result in undercorrection or overcorrection, requiring further treatment.
  • Dry eye: Dry eye is a common side effect after PKR, but it typically resolves over time.

PKR surgery is a good option for individuals seeking to improve their vision without wearing glasses or contact lenses. It's essential to consult with an eye doctor to determine if PKR is the right choice for you.
