You can't directly open an Excel file in "protected mode." Excel's "Protected View" is a security feature that opens files from untrusted sources in a restricted mode to prevent malicious code from running.
Here's how it works:
- Protected View: This mode opens files in a read-only state, limiting your ability to edit or interact with the content. It's designed to protect your computer from potential threats.
- Untrusted Sources: Files downloaded from the internet, received as email attachments, or from unknown sources are considered untrusted.
- Security Measures: Protected View restricts editing, macros, and other potentially harmful actions until you explicitly enable them.
To open a file in Protected View:
- Enable Protected View: Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View. Check the boxes for the types of files you want to open in Protected View.
- Disable Protected View: If you trust the source of the file, you can disable Protected View by clicking "Enable Editing" in the yellow warning bar at the top of the Excel window.
Note: It's generally recommended to leave Protected View enabled for untrusted files to minimize security risks.
