COP 15, also known as the UN Biodiversity Conference, was held in Montreal, Canada in December 2022. The conference resulted in the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, a landmark agreement with 196 countries committing to ambitious goals for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
While the agreement was adopted by consensus, not all countries signed the agreement at the conference itself. The signing process is ongoing, and many countries have since formally signed the agreement.
The Global Biodiversity Framework is a significant step towards addressing the global biodiversity crisis. It sets targets for protecting 30% of the planet's land and ocean by 2030, reducing the rate of extinction, and promoting sustainable use of biodiversity.
