How Do Solar Panels Work?

Solar panels work by converting sunlight into electricity using the photovoltaic effect. This process involves the following steps:

1. Sunlight Hits the Panel

Sunlight, which is made up of photons (tiny energy packets), strikes the solar panel.

2. Photons Knock Electrons Loose

These photons hit the silicon atoms within the solar panel, knocking loose electrons.

3. Electrons Flow Through the Panel

The loose electrons are then able to flow freely through the panel, creating an electric current.

4. Current is Collected and Transformed

The electric current is collected by wires and then converted from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) by an inverter. This AC electricity can then be used to power homes and businesses.
