Petrositis is a rare and potentially serious infection of the petrous bone, which is a dense, pyramid-shaped bone located at the base of the skull near the ear. This infection often arises as a complication of untreated or poorly managed middle ear infections (otitis media).
The petrous bone contains important structures, including the inner ear, facial nerve, and cranial nerves, which can be affected by the infection. Symptoms of petrositis can include severe ear pain, fever, headache, facial paralysis, hearing loss, and dizziness.
While petrositis is uncommon, it can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and surgical drainage of the infected area.
