Published in Design 2 mins read

You can mirror a shape in Illustrator using the Reflect Tool. This tool allows you to create a mirrored copy of your selected object along a specified axis.

Steps to Mirror a Shape in Illustrator:

  1. Select the shape you want to mirror. You can select multiple shapes if you need to mirror them together.
  2. Go to the Tools panel and select the Reflect Tool. It's represented by a symbol that looks like a mirrored "R".
  3. Click and drag the Reflect Tool across the artboard. This will create a preview of the mirrored shape.
  4. Choose an axis of reflection:
    • Vertical: Click and drag the tool vertically.
    • Horizontal: Click and drag the tool horizontally.
  5. Adjust the preview's position if needed. You can move the preview by dragging it with your mouse.
  6. Click to confirm the reflection. This will create a mirrored copy of the selected shape.

Additional Tips:

  • You can also mirror a shape by using the Transform panel. Open the panel by going to Window > Transform.
  • To reflect a shape along a specific axis, use the Reflect Tool and click on the artboard where you want the reflection to occur. Then, click and drag the tool along the desired axis.
  • You can also use the Reflect Tool to mirror text.

Example:

Imagine you have a simple star shape on your artboard. You want to create a symmetrical design by mirroring the star across a vertical axis. You can use the Reflect Tool to create a mirrored copy of the star, which will then be positioned on the opposite side of the original star.
