Published in Design Software 2 mins read

Editing rectangles in Adobe Illustrator is a simple yet powerful process that allows you to manipulate their size, shape, and appearance.

Using the Selection Tools

  • Direct Selection Tool (A): This tool lets you select and move individual anchor points of a rectangle, allowing for precise adjustments to its shape.
  • Selection Tool (V): This tool lets you select and move the entire rectangle, resizing it proportionally or freely.

Resizing and Transforming

  • Scale Tool (S): This tool lets you resize the rectangle proportionally or non-proportionally. You can also use it to rotate the rectangle.
  • Free Transform Tool (E): This tool allows you to manipulate the rectangle's size, position, and rotation in a more flexible way.

Editing Corners and Sides

  • Direct Selection Tool (A): Use this tool to select individual anchor points and drag them to adjust the corners and sides of the rectangle.
  • Corner Widget: When you select a rectangle, you'll see small squares at each corner and middle point of its sides. These are called corner widgets. You can click and drag these widgets to adjust the size and shape of the rectangle.

Adding and Deleting Anchor Points

  • Pen Tool (P): You can add anchor points to the rectangle using the Pen Tool. Simply click on the edge of the rectangle where you want to add a new anchor point.
  • Delete Anchor Point: Select the Direct Selection Tool (A) and click on an anchor point to select it. Press the Delete key to remove the selected anchor point.

Modifying Appearance

  • Fill and Stroke: Use the Fill and Stroke panels to change the rectangle's color, pattern, or gradient.
  • Transparency: Use the Transparency panel to adjust the rectangle's opacity.
  • Effects: Apply various effects to the rectangle, such as drop shadows, glows, and bevels, using the Effects menu.

By mastering these basic editing techniques, you can create a wide range of designs using rectangles in Illustrator.
