Crochet squares are measured in two ways: side-to-side and corner-to-corner.
Side-to-Side Measurement
- Lay the square flat. Make sure it is smooth and without any wrinkles.
- Use a measuring tape or ruler. Place it along one side of the square, starting from the edge of the first stitch and ending at the edge of the last stitch on that side.
- Record the measurement. This is the side-to-side measurement of your crochet square.
Corner-to-Corner Measurement
- Lay the square flat. Ensure it is smooth and wrinkle-free.
- Use a measuring tape or ruler. Place it diagonally from one corner of the square to the opposite corner.
- Record the measurement. This is the corner-to-corner measurement of your crochet square.
Measuring for Projects
- Use the appropriate measurement for your project. If you are making a blanket, you will likely want to use the side-to-side measurement. If you are making a granny square motif, you might use the corner-to-corner measurement.
- Consider the gauge. The gauge of your crochet is the number of stitches and rows per inch or centimeter. This will affect the size of your squares.
Example
If you are making a blanket with squares that measure 4 inches side-to-side, you will need to crochet squares that are 4 inches wide and 4 inches long.
