Does Belarus Allow Dual Citizenship?

Published in Citizenship Law 1 min read

Belarus does not allow dual citizenship. This means that Belarusian citizens are not permitted to hold citizenship in another country at the same time.

If a Belarusian citizen acquires citizenship in another country, they are legally required to renounce their Belarusian citizenship. This applies to both naturalized and birthright citizenships.

There are some exceptions to this rule, such as:

  • Children born to Belarusian parents abroad: These children may be granted citizenship in the country of their birth, but they must renounce it before reaching the age of 18.
  • Citizenship obtained through marriage: If a Belarusian citizen marries a citizen of another country, they may be eligible for citizenship in that country. However, they must renounce their Belarusian citizenship.

It is important to note that the Belarusian government may make exceptions to these rules in certain cases. However, it is always best to consult with a legal professional before making any decisions about citizenship.
