Can I Fall Asleep With a Baby on My Chest?

Published in Child Safety 1 min read

It is not recommended to fall asleep with a baby on your chest.

Why is it not recommended?

  • Risk of Suffocation: Babies are at a higher risk of suffocation when they are sleeping on their stomachs or sides.
  • Accidental Rollover: Adults can easily roll over in their sleep, potentially suffocating or injuring the baby.
  • Increased Risk of SIDS: The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

Safer Alternatives:

  • Co-Sleeping: If you choose to co-sleep, ensure a safe sleeping environment, such as a firm mattress, no loose bedding, and a separate sleep space for the baby.
  • Bassinet or Crib: These are the safest options for baby sleep. Place the baby on their back in a crib or bassinet near your bed.

Remember:

  • Always follow safe sleep guidelines from trusted sources like the AAP.
  • If you are unsure about safe sleep practices, consult your pediatrician for personalized advice.
