You can tell your baby is developing a secure attachment by observing their behavior and interactions with you.
Signs of Secure Attachment:
- Happy and content when you're around. Your baby feels safe and secure with you, and they enjoy being close to you.
- Easily soothed when they're upset. They know you'll be there to comfort them, and they trust you to meet their needs.
- Explore their environment confidently. They feel safe enough to venture out and explore, knowing you're a secure base to return to.
- Show distress when you leave, but are comforted quickly upon your return. They miss you when you're gone, but they know you'll come back.
- Seek you out for comfort and reassurance. They trust you to provide them with the support they need.
Building a Secure Attachment:
- Be responsive to your baby's needs. Respond to their cries, smiles, and other cues promptly and consistently.
- Offer plenty of physical touch. Hold, cuddle, and rock your baby often.
- Engage in eye contact and conversation. Talk to your baby, sing to them, and read to them.
- Be patient and understanding. It takes time to build a secure attachment.
It's important to remember that every baby develops at their own pace. If you have concerns about your baby's development, talk to your pediatrician.
