Butterflies are insects, and insects are a class within the phylum Arthropoda.

Arthropods are characterized by having a segmented body, an exoskeleton, and jointed appendages. Butterflies exhibit all of these characteristics. They have a distinct head, thorax, and abdomen. They also have a hard, protective exoskeleton made of chitin, and their legs, wings, and antennae are jointed.
