What is alive but can't reproduce?

Published in Biology 1 min read

There are many living things that can't reproduce on their own, including:

  • Sterile individuals: Some animals, like mules (a cross between a horse and a donkey), are sterile and cannot reproduce.
  • Hybrids: Hybrids, like ligers (a cross between a lion and a tiger), are often infertile.
  • Clones: Clones are genetically identical copies of an organism, and while they can live and grow, they cannot reproduce naturally.
  • Certain species: Some species, like the bdelloid rotifer, reproduce asexually and do not have males.

While these organisms are alive, they cannot create offspring through traditional means of reproduction.
