What Animal Is Immortal?

Published in Biology 1 min read

There is no animal that is truly immortal. All living things, including animals, have a finite lifespan and will eventually die.

However, some animals have extremely long lifespans and can live for hundreds or even thousands of years. These animals include:

  • The Greenland Shark: This deep-sea shark can live for over 400 years, making it one of the longest-living vertebrates on Earth.
  • The Ocean Quahog Clam: This clam can live for over 500 years, and some individuals have been found to be over 400 years old.
  • The Turritopsis Dohrnii (Immortal Jellyfish): This jellyfish has the unique ability to revert to its polyp stage after reaching sexual maturity, effectively making it biologically immortal. However, it can still die from predation or disease.

While these animals may have incredibly long lifespans, they are still mortal and will eventually die.
