How Do Humans Get Yeast?

Published in Biology 2 mins read

Humans get yeast in a few different ways:

1. Naturally Occurring Yeast

  • Our Bodies: Yeast is a type of fungus that is naturally present in our bodies, particularly in the digestive tract. This is known as commensal yeast and usually doesn't cause any problems.
  • The Environment: Yeast is found in the air, soil, and on plants. We are exposed to it daily through breathing, touching surfaces, and consuming food.

2. Consumption of Yeast-Containing Products

  • Food: Yeast is a key ingredient in many foods, including bread, beer, and wine. It is also used in some cheeses and other fermented products.
  • Supplements: Yeast-based supplements, such as brewer's yeast, are available for their nutritional benefits.

3. Infection

  • Yeast Infections: While yeast is normally harmless, certain conditions can lead to an overgrowth of yeast, resulting in infections. This is most common in the vagina (yeast infection) or mouth (thrush). These infections are usually caused by an imbalance in the body's natural flora.

It is important to note that while yeast is generally harmless, an overgrowth can lead to infections. If you suspect you have a yeast infection, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
