Are There Any Other Gases That Humans Can Breathe?

Published in Biology 1 min read

No, humans cannot breathe any other gases besides oxygen. While other gases exist in the atmosphere, like nitrogen and carbon dioxide, our bodies are specifically designed to utilize oxygen for respiration.

Here's why:

  • Oxygen is essential for cellular respiration: Our cells need oxygen to produce energy, a process called cellular respiration. This process breaks down glucose and releases energy, which powers all of our bodily functions.
  • Other gases lack the necessary properties: Nitrogen, the most abundant gas in the atmosphere, is inert and doesn't participate in cellular respiration. Carbon dioxide, a byproduct of respiration, is toxic in high concentrations.

While some animals, like fish, can extract oxygen from water, humans rely on breathing air that contains a sufficient amount of oxygen.
