William Wordsworth had five children, but only two survived to adulthood:
-
Dora Wordsworth (1804-1847): She was a talented artist and a close confidante to her father. She remained unmarried and lived with him until his death in 1850. She died at the age of 43.
-
Thomas Wordsworth (1802-1889): He was a lawyer and politician. He was the only son to survive infancy and continued his father's legacy by advocating for social reform.
Wordsworth's other children unfortunately did not survive infancy:
- John Wordsworth (1796-1796): He died a few days after birth.
- Catherine Wordsworth (1797-1797): She died within a few months of birth.
- William Wordsworth (1800-1800): He died within a few weeks of birth.
Wordsworth's experiences of losing his children deeply affected his poetry, with themes of loss, mortality, and the power of nature frequently appearing in his work.
