How Do You Remove a Rear Cassette on a Bike?

Published in Bike Maintenance 2 mins read

To remove a rear cassette on a bike, you'll need a few tools:

  • Cassette lockring tool: This tool fits onto the lockring and allows you to loosen and tighten it.
  • Chain whip: This tool helps you hold the cassette while you loosen the lockring.

Here's how to remove a rear cassette:

  1. Shift to the smallest cog: This helps reduce the amount of force needed to loosen the lockring.
  2. Place the chain whip on the largest cog: This keeps the cassette from turning while you loosen the lockring.
  3. Attach the cassette lockring tool to the lockring: Make sure the tool is securely attached.
  4. Turn the lockring tool counterclockwise: This will loosen the lockring. You may need to use some force, especially if the lockring is very tight.
  5. Once the lockring is loose, remove the cassette: The cassette should slide off the freehub body.

Tips:

  • Use a lubricant on the lockring threads: This can help prevent the lockring from seizing up and make it easier to remove in the future.
  • Be careful not to damage the freehub body: The freehub body is a delicate part of the rear hub.
  • Replace the lockring with a new one if it is damaged: A damaged lockring can make it difficult to remove the cassette in the future.
