Barbie dolls started sporting a belly button around 1999 with the release of the Surf City Barbie dolls. This new "belly button body" became the standard for playline Barbie dolls throughout the 2000s.
While earlier versions of Barbie didn't have a visible belly button, this design change brought Barbie closer to a more realistic human appearance.
