How Do You Check Engine Oil By Hand?

Published in Automotive Maintenance 1 min read

You can check your engine oil by hand using a simple, straightforward process:

1. Park Your Car on Level Ground

Ensure your car is parked on a level surface. This prevents inaccurate readings due to oil pooling in one area.

2. Locate the Dipstick

The dipstick is typically located near the front of the engine, with a yellow or orange handle.

3. Pull Out the Dipstick

Carefully pull out the dipstick, wiping it clean with a paper towel or rag.

4. Reinsert and Remove the Dipstick

Insert the dipstick all the way back in and pull it out again.

5. Check the Oil Level

The oil level should be between the "Full" and "Low" markings on the dipstick.

6. Interpret the Oil Condition

The oil should be a light amber color. If it's dark or black, it may be time for an oil change.

7. Replace the Dipstick

Securely replace the dipstick in its holder.

By following these steps, you can easily check your engine oil level and condition by hand.
