How Do I Reorder Layers in AutoCAD?

Published in AutoCAD 2 mins read

You can reorder layers in AutoCAD using the Layer Properties Manager. Here's how:

  1. Open the Layer Properties Manager: Go to the Home tab and click on Layer Properties. You can also use the shortcut LA.
  2. Select the layer: Click on the layer you want to move in the list.
  3. Drag and drop: Click and hold the layer name and drag it to the desired position in the list.
  4. Apply changes: Click OK to save the changes.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Use the keyboard: You can also use the Up and Down arrow keys to move a selected layer up or down in the list.
  • Reorder multiple layers: Select multiple layers by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking on each layer. Then, drag and drop the selection to reorder them.
  • Use the layer order to control visibility: Layers at the top of the list are drawn on top of those at the bottom. This can be helpful for organizing and controlling the visibility of different parts of your drawing.

Example: If you have a layer named "Walls" and a layer named "Doors", you can move the "Doors" layer above the "Walls" layer to ensure that doors are always drawn on top of walls.
