How Do You Remove a Security Torx Bolt?

Published in Auto Repair 2 mins read

Security Torx bolts, also known as tamper-resistant Torx bolts, are designed to be difficult to remove without the proper tool. Here's how to remove one:

1. Identify the Bolt Type:

  • Security Torx bolts have a pin in the center of the star-shaped recess. This pin prevents standard Torx drivers from fitting.

2. Get the Right Tool:

  • Security Torx driver: These drivers have a small hole in the tip that aligns with the pin in the bolt.
  • Security Torx socket: These sockets are similar to standard Torx sockets but also have a hole in the tip.

3. Align the Driver or Socket:

  • Carefully align the driver or socket with the bolt. The hole in the tool must align with the pin in the bolt.

4. Apply Pressure and Rotate:

  • Apply pressure to the driver or socket and rotate the bolt counterclockwise. You may need to use a wrench or breaker bar for added leverage, depending on the size and tightness of the bolt.

5. Remove the Bolt:

  • Once the bolt is loosened, continue rotating it counterclockwise until it is completely removed.

Remember: Removing security Torx bolts can be challenging, especially if they are very tight. If you are unsure about the process, it is best to seek assistance from a professional mechanic.
