How Do I Create an Apple App-Specific Password?

Published in Apple ID Security 2 mins read

To create an Apple app-specific password, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Apple ID account page: Open your web browser and navigate to https://appleid.apple.com/.
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
  3. Select "Security" from the left-hand menu.
  4. Click "App-Specific Passwords" under the "Password and Security" section.
  5. Click "Generate Password."
  6. Enter a descriptive name for the password. This helps you remember which app it's for, especially if you have multiple app-specific passwords.
  7. Click "Create" to generate a password.
  8. Copy the generated password. You'll need this password to sign in to the app.

Note: Apple app-specific passwords are unique to each app and are different from your regular Apple ID password. They are used to enhance security by preventing third-party apps from accessing your full Apple ID password.

Examples:

  • You can create an app-specific password for your banking app, allowing you to access your account without sharing your primary Apple ID password.
  • You can create an app-specific password for a third-party email client, allowing you to sync your emails without revealing your main Apple ID password.

Practical Insights:

  • App-specific passwords are temporary and can be revoked at any time.
  • You can manage and delete existing app-specific passwords from the "App-Specific Passwords" section on your Apple ID account page.
  • If you forget an app-specific password, you can generate a new one.
