Which animal has shell-like skin?

Published in Animal Characteristics 1 min read

The animal with shell-like skin is the armadillo.

Armadillos are mammals with a unique adaptation: a bony shell covering their bodies. This shell, made of overlapping plates, provides them with protection from predators.

Though armadillos have a shell, it's not technically a shell like a turtle's. While a turtle's shell is a part of its skeleton, an armadillo's shell is made of bony plates embedded in its skin.

There are many species of armadillos, all with different shell sizes and shapes. For example, the giant armadillo has a large, dome-shaped shell, while the three-banded armadillo has a flexible shell that allows it to roll into a ball for defense.
